What is Botox®?
Botox is a prescription medication injected into the facial or neck muscles in order to temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines between the eyes, in the brow area, eye area, near the mouth (smile lines) and on the neck. Made from purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, Botox reduces the activity of the muscles that cause frown lines and smile lines. It is the only treatment of its type approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. After Botox, you will notice immediate improvement in moderate to severe frown lines with results lasting up to four months.

How long does Botox® last?
In an ideal world, the effects of a neurotoxin last forever. However, the effects do eventually wear off. After time, the neurotoxin fades. The nerves will begin to send signals to the muscles, and they will begin to contract and work once more. By and large, a neurotoxin lasts for roughly 3 to 4 months, depending on skin type and other factors.

Is Botox® safe?
Small doses are considered safe. This also is true for the long term. Botox can safely be stopped at any time without your skin looking worse than it did before you started. Botox has been around for almost two decades and many advancements have been made to improve its efficacy and safety.

It’s essential that you notify your practitioner if you’ve received other kinds of injections in the three months prior to your appointment. Avoid using medicines, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and other drugs that thin the blood prior to your treatment. These may increase bleeding and bruising risks. Furthermore, be sure to tell your practitioner if you’re taking any allergy drugs, muscle relaxers or sleep aids.
The maximal effects will appear around the 2nd week. The recovery of muscle function is gradual, and facial lines may become noticeable again 3-4 months after your treatment. You may schedule your next Botox appointment by then to keep the skin from going back to its previous condition.
