TRIGGER POINT INJECTION IN INDIANAPOLIS, IN

Best Practitioner for Trigger Point Injections in Indianapolis

WHAT ARE TRIGGER POINTS?

Trigger points, (also known as muscle knots, or trigger sites) are specific areas of spasm and inflammation within the skeletal muscles. In most cases, these trigger points are a result of trauma to the muscle fibers. This can occur after trauma, such as an auto accident, sports injury, or even repetitive motions.

A trigger point can cause extreme pain. It may feel tender, hard, or twitch when you touch it. In some cases, a trigger point can irritate surrounding nerves causing pain to spread to nearby areas (referred pain).  Your pain may limit your ability to move comfortably.

A trigger point injection is used to treat various painful conditions. These injections are used to inactivate pain signals in the body through the release of endorphins and inactivation of the trigger point injected.

WHAT IS A TRIGGER POINT INJECTION?

A trigger point injection can help soothe muscle pain, especially in your arms, legs, lower back and neck. It also can be used to treat fibromyalgia, tension headaches and myofascial pain. Trigger points are painful “knots” in your muscles. They form when a muscle can’t relax. Sometimes you can feel these knots when you rub your muscle. Injecting small amounts of anesthetic and steroid into the trigger point can help alleviate the pain.

Trigger point injections are performed in our office. The trigger point is located by palpation by the practitioner and the site is marked. The skin of the site to be injected is cleaned with an antiseptic solution to help reduce the risk of infection. A local anesthetic may be applied to numb the area prior to the injection to make the procedure more comfortable for the patient. The needle is then inserted into the trigger point and the medication is injected. A bandage may be applied to the injection site after the procedure, if necessary.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS?

  • Reduction in pain
  • Increased mobility
  • Increased range of motion
  • Virtually no down time
  • Minimally invasive procedure

HOW IS A TRIGGER POINT INJECTION DONE?

You will sit or lie down for the procedure. Your practitioner will press on your muscle to locate the area where you have pain. Then, she will insert a small needle into the area and inject a mixture of anesthetic and steroid.

You can have several trigger points injected during one visit to our office. The procedure only takes a few minutes.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

After a trigger point injection, you can actively use your muscle. However, you should avoid strenuous activity for the first few days.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF A TRIGGER POINT INJECTION?

The risk of complication from a trigger point injection is very low. Complications such as bleeding and infection at the injection site are uncommon. However, you may have temporary soreness or numbness at the injection site.

ARE TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Trigger point injection may be right for you if your muscle pain has not improved with other treatment, including pain medication and physical therapy.
